NEXT-GENERATION SCALABLE AEM ELECTROLYZERS AS SUSTAINABLE HYDROGEN PRODUCTION SYSTEM

NEREUS is an EU-funded project developing next-generation anion-exchange membrane (AEM) electrolyzers for sustainable, efficient, cost-competitive hydrogen production. It combines compact stack architectures, platinum-group-metal-free materials, advanced membrane-electrode assemblies (MEAs), and smart Balance of Plant components and AI-driven diagnostics to enable flexible operation with renewable energy, improving durability and support industrial scale-up.

Nereus

The mission

The NEREUS project aims to develop and validate advanced AEM electrolyzer technology  combining the strengths of traditional alkaline and PEM technologies, delivering high compact architectures, high performance, long lifetime, and and reduced hydrogen production costs.

The Challenge

The NEREUS project addresses the key barriers that still limit the industrial deployment of AEM electrolysis for green hydrogen. While AEM electrolysis can combine the cost advantages of alkaline systems with the compactness and dynamic response of PEM electrolysis, further progress is needed in materials durability, high-current-density operation, scalable manufacturing, renewable integration and market readiness
